Connecting Strathcona County and Fort Saskatchewan through new transit route
February 27, 2024
Under a new three-year agreement, Strathcona County will begin providing weekday bus service between Sherwood Park and Fort Saskatchewan starting in July.
“Strathcona County is proud to collaborate with the City of Fort Saskatchewan to provide regional transit service between our municipalities, and into the greater Edmonton region,” says Strathcona County Mayor Rod Frank. “We have an outstanding commuter network that is well integrated throughout Edmonton and provides direct service to downtown, Rogers Place, post-secondary institutions and major connection points for a variety of recreation venues and services. This is an excellent example of regional co-operation and there will be no cost to Strathcona County taxpayers.”
The new service, which will be funded by the City of Fort Saskatchewan, supports the needs of commuters who travel between Sherwood Park, Edmonton and Fort Saskatchewan. The weekday service will include four morning and four afternoon round trips during summer months, and four morning and seven afternoon round trips during the fall/winter months.
"In response to community demand and through collaboration with our regional partners, the commuter route between Fort Saskatchewan and Sherwood Park aims to bridge connectivity gaps and provide a vital link for residents commuting for work, or school, medical appointments and more," says Gale Katchur, Mayor of the City of Fort Saskatchewan. "This initiative aligns with our commitment to meeting evolving transportation needs and improving quality of life."
The new route will travel between Bethel Transit Terminal and Dow Centennial Centre, improving resident access from both municipalities to local resources, services, businesses and amenities. The Arc electronic fare payment system supports easier access to local transit in both municipalities for residents throughout the region.
Strathcona County and Fort Saskatchewan are the first Edmonton Metro Region partners to establish a new route under the regional Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed in January of 2024. The partnership furthers the MOU’s foundation of positive working relationships, collaboration and mutual support.
More information about the new service will be shared in the coming months on strathcona.ca/transit and goforttransit.ca.
